Does Petcube require a subscription? What each device does without one

Which Petcube devices work without a paid plan, which one needs one, and what the first year costs on each, from Petcube's US pages on October 5, 2026.

Mostly no. Petcube's cameras (Cam, Cam 360, Play 2, and Bites 2 Lite) work out of the box without a subscription. The fountain has no fee either. The GPS Tracker is the exception: Petcube says it needs an active paid plan to work at all.

This page is the device-by-device answer. It does not compare Care tiers. That is the Care Optimal vs Premium guide. It also does not redo Tracker plan math or filter math. Those are in the GPS Tracker costs guide and the fountain price guide.

Checked: October 5, 2026, on Petcube's US product pages, Care page, and support articles. Prices, stock, plans, and terms can change. Confirm in checkout and in the app before you pay.

The short answer

  • Cameras: no subscription required. Live video and two-way audio work on the free Basic tier. Petcube's camera FAQs say that without Petcube Care you cannot store video or get smart alerts. Care is the optional paid plan for history and alerts.
  • GPS Tracker: a paid plan is required. Petcube says the tracker sends location over cellular networks through a built-in SIM, and you buy the plan in the app after setup.
  • Fountain: no subscription. Petcube says filter and tank alerts are included after you buy it. Filters are a separate purchase.

The four camera product pages use the same FAQ line: the camera can be used out of the box and does not require a subscription, but without Petcube Care you will not be able to store video and get smart alerts. Petcube's Care page lists live video streaming on the free Basic tier, which it says comes with every Petcube camera.

The laser and the treat toss are not on Petcube's list of Care features. The Care page lists video history, 30-second clips, smart alerts, the web interface, downloads, Daily Diary videos, smart filters, and on Premium, more cameras, a longer warranty, and online vet chat. We did not test the laser or the treat toss on an account without Care. If a toy feature is the reason you are buying, confirm it in the app inside the 45-day money-back window Petcube lists for store purchases.

What the first year costs, device by device

These are arithmetic from the sale prices on October 5, 2026, before tax and shipping. Petcube's banner said free shipping on orders over $50. The "+ Care" line uses the yearly Optimal plan at $59.88, the lowest yearly Care total on the Care page. Use it as a floor, not a recommendation. Which tier fits is the Care guide's job.

DeviceDevice price on October 5, 2026First year, device onlyFirst year with a plan
Petcube Cam$31.99, reduced from $34.99$31.99$91.87 with yearly Optimal Care
Petcube Cam 360$46.99, reduced from $52.99$46.99$106.87 with yearly Optimal Care
Petcube Play 2$79.99, reduced from $99.00$79.99$139.87 with yearly Optimal Care
Petcube Bites 2 Lite$99.99, reduced from $149.99$99.99$159.87 with yearly Optimal Care
Petcube GPS Tracker$39.99, reduced from $52.99Not usable without a plan$123.99 with one prepaid Basic year ($84)
Petcube Fountain (ceramic)$89.99, reduced from $99.99$89.99, plus filtersNo plan exists. Filters are the running cost.

Each camera product page showed Add to cart and an in-stock offer. Play 2 also carried a "Back in stock" label. The Tracker page showed Add to cart. The fountain is a conflict again: its product page showed Add to cart and an in-stock offer for the ceramic basin, while the fountain overview and the site menu said Out of stock. Recheck it before you plan around it.

Petcube says a 14-day free trial of Care comes with every camera purchase. That trial is not a plan you have to keep. If you want history after day 14, the yearly figures above are the budget.

The Tracker line uses the cheapest one-year path on the Tracker page. Monthly Basic was $12 a month, and longer prepaid terms were also listed. Those options, plus coverage and charging, are in the Tracker costs guide. Do not use a Care plan for the Tracker. They are separate products.

The fountain total stops at the device on purpose. What filters cost per year, and whether they were in stock, is in the fountain price guide.

When the free tier is enough

Skip Care if all of these are true:

  • You open the app on purpose to check in, rather than needing to know what happened while you were away.
  • You only want to talk to the dog, toss a treat, or run the laser in real time.
  • A missed bark or a visitor at the door would not change what you do next.

Pay for Care when you need a record afterward or alerts that tell you when to look. Pick the tier in the Care guide, not here.

Petcube also sells camera and Care bundles, advertised from $5.99 a month for Cam and $9.99 a month for Bites 2 Lite. A bundle is a commitment, not a free camera. The headline says cancel anytime, but the offer terms ask for at least 12 monthly renewals, or the camera's full price if you cancel early. Read the Care Bundle vs buying a Cam guide before you choose that route.
