Petmate Sky Kennel vs Vari: which crate fits your trip?

A kennel that is cheap in the wrong size is an expensive mistake. Start with your dog's measurements and your carrier's transport rules. Then decide whether Sky Kennel's travel accessories justify its price over an All Purpose Vari.

Choose Sky Kennel when you need its included travel supplies and can verify the exact size with your airline. Choose Vari for a simpler everyday carrier when it fits the dog and the intended journey. A suitable kennel you already own may need no replacement.

These are different sizes, so the starting-price gap is not a like-for-like saving. Select the size first, then compare the delivered total, return conditions and any accessories you need. Prices and availability can change.

Measure the dog against usable interior space

Measure your dog standing naturally, including its head and ears as required by your airline's current instructions. Check the room needed to stand, turn and lie comfortably. Weight ranges and breed examples cannot replace measurements.

Petmate's Sky Kennel page separates nominal size from interior dimensions. The 28-inch model, for example, lists an interior of 24.25 × 18.25 × 19.5 inches. A dog that needs 28 inches of usable length will not fit simply because the product name says 28 inches.

Ask Petmate for the exact variant's interior measurements when a listing is unclear. Also measure your vehicle opening and storage space using exterior dimensions. Interior fit and outside clearance answer different questions.

What Sky Kennel adds

The listed kit includes live-animal and identification stickers, a food-and-water cup and absorbent material. Those supplies can simplify preparation, but do not establish airline acceptance. Check whether the specific journey requires different hardware, bowls, labels or bedding.

Sky Kennel handles are listed only for the 21- and 28-inch models. The 36-, 40- and 48-inch sizes ship freight. Plan for receiving and moving a bulky kennel, and confirm freight charges and return arrangements before paying.

The All Purpose Vari listing includes bolts and wing nuts. Handles are listed for its 19-, 24- and 28-inch models; larger versions have tie-down holes. A tie-down hole does not establish crash certification. Petmate also requires freight delivery for the 36- and 40-inch Vari sizes, so compare freight and return costs on both ranges.

Get airline confirmation before ordering

Petmate cites compliance with a 2025 IATA edition on its Sky Kennel page. IATA's current container guidance says it does not approve or certify individual container brands. Do not interpret a product's travel marketing as permission to fly.

Send the operating airline the exact model, size and exterior dimensions. Confirm its rules for your dog, route, aircraft, ventilation, fasteners and accessories, plus booking and seasonal restrictions. Cargo or checked-animal arrangements differ from cabin travel. These kennels should not be assumed to fit under a seat.

If the airline cannot confirm suitability, settle that question before buying. A returnable kennel still leaves you without a travel plan.

When another option makes more sense

For home use, an existing appropriately fitted crate may be sufficient. A folding wire crate may be easier to store, provided it suits your dog and setting. For vehicle travel, research restraints and verified crash testing separately. We have not established crash performance for either kennel here.

Is Sky Kennel worth the extra money?

It can be when its size fits and you need the included travel accessories. Compare equal sizes and delivered costs. The name alone does not make it the better choice.

Can I choose by the weight range?

Use it only as an initial filter. The dog needs adequate usable space, and the airline may impose additional measurement requirements.
