Petmate Replendish plastic vs stainless: what does easier refilling cost?
Compare gravity waterer capacity, bowl material, refill handling and filter costs without confusing a reservoir with daily care.

A gravity waterer can reduce how often you refill a bowl. It still needs daily attention. Choose the plastic Replendish if you want a choice of reservoir sizes at a lower starting price. Consider the stainless version if its bowl and one-gallon capacity suit your cleaning routine enough to justify the extra cost.
An ordinary washable bowl may be simpler, especially if you already refill it reliably. Neither Replendish is a powered fountain, and a large bottle is not a plan for leaving a dog alone for days.

Upfront price and capacity
US listings checked October 16, 2026 show the plastic model from $24.99 for 0.5 gallon and the one-gallon stainless model at $74.99. Compare the same useful capacity before judging the price gap. Select the variant and check delivery cost and stock; prices can change.
| Choice | Listed reservoir sizes | Practical tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic Replendish with Microban | 0.5, 1, 2.5 or 4 gallons | More capacity choices; a full large bottle is heavier to handle. |
| Stainless Steel Replendish | 1 gallon | Stainless drinking bowl and non-skid feet; fewer capacity choices. |
| Ordinary water bowl | Depends on your existing bowl | No reservoir or replacement filter to manage. |

Choose a bottle you can comfortably refill
Before choosing the biggest reservoir, consider carrying, filling and turning it into position. Check whether it fits your sink and whether the assembled unit fits the drinking area without blocking a walkway. Product graphics and Details measurements are inconsistent, so request exact variant measurements for a tight spot.
Capacity does not tell you how many unattended days the water will last. Drinking, spills, room conditions and other pets all change usage. Check the water supply and bowl every day, and keep the station accessible.
Cleaning matters more than the finish
Both listings distinguish the dishwasher-safe base or bowl from the bottle, which requires hand washing. Follow the instructions supplied with the selected model rather than putting every component in the dishwasher.
The FDA advises washing water bowls daily. Empty and inspect the drinking area, and clean the reservoir and cap as directed. A dispenser does not remove that work. Microban branding is not a claim that the unit sterilizes drinking water, and a charcoal filter is not proof of pathogen removal.
If disassembly and bottle washing would make your routine harder, buy a simpler bowl. A product is easier to live with only if you can keep it clean.
Budget for filters without inventing an annual cost
Petmate lists a three-pack of Replendish and Mason charcoal replacement filters for $14.99, or about $5 each before shipping and tax. Its filter page has conflicting replacement guidance: one bullet says 6–8 weeks, while the instructions say 4–6 weeks.
Check the instructions supplied with your unit and ask Petmate to clarify the interval. We have not selected one of those intervals to present an apparently precise yearly total. Filter condition and the manufacturer's directions matter; replacing a filter does not replace washing the bowl.
Is the stainless version a stainless reservoir?
The listing describes a stainless drinking bowl. Do not assume the entire bottle and assembly are stainless steel.
Is this the same as a fountain?
No. Gravity replenishes the bowl from the reservoir. If you specifically want powered circulation, compare a fountain buying guide and include its power and cleaning requirements.
