Petmate exercise pen: which height and layout fit your puppy space?
Compare current pen heights, handling weights and a calculated floor plan, with supervision and doorway checks before buying.

Buy a pen for the space you can safely set up, not simply the tallest panel you can afford. The Petmate Single Door Exercise Pen provides an open-top boundary for a supervised area. It has a different job from a travel kennel or a puppy crate.
Choose it when a configurable boundary solves a real layout problem. A puppy-proofed room or suitable gate may already provide the area you need. An open-top pen is a poor purchase for a dog that climbs or jumps out, regardless of the height label.

Currently selectable heights and handling weights
US listings checked October 16, 2026 start at $102.99 for the 24-inch version. The current selector offers 24, 30, 36 and 42 inches. A 48-inch gallery image is not proof that a 48-inch variant is currently purchasable. Confirm stock and selected price before ordering.
| Panel height | Listed product weight | Buying check |
|---|---|---|
| 24 inches | 20 pounds | Lowest current option; still needs an individual containment assessment. |
| 30 inches | 25 pounds | Check folding and carrying comfort. |
| 36 inches | 28 pounds | Confirm storage location and access. |
| 42 inches | 35 pounds | Heaviest current option; height is not an escape guarantee. |
These are handling weights, not dog-weight limits. No breed-to-height rule reliably tells you whether your dog will remain inside.
Calculate floor space before you order
Product illustrations show eight panels, each 24 inches wide. In a regular square using two panels per side, the calculated outline is approximately 48 × 48 inches, or 16 square feet. That calculation excludes hardware, tolerances and clearance around the pen. Measure the final assembled layout before relying on it.
The listing's 192-inch figure is the total run of eight panels, not the footprint or a side of a square. Different shapes change useful floor area. Sketch your intended arrangement with the bed and water bowl in place, then leave room for people to pass and for the door to open.
Check the raised doorway for the puppy's access and for human trip clearance. A pen that technically fits but blocks the room's path is the wrong layout.
Setup and supervision
Petmate lists wire construction, a double-latch door, snap-hook assembly and fold-flat storage. Follow the supplied assembly instructions and check the latches, joins and stability before introducing the puppy.
Check whether the individual dog could catch its head or paws in openings. Keep the pen away from stairs, cords, shelves and objects the puppy can reach through or over the panels. Outdoors, provide water and shade, use an appropriate location and supervise. A pen does not replace walks, care or training.
Watch the initial sessions closely. If the dog jumps, climbs, pushes the structure or becomes distressed, change the setup rather than treating a higher number as a guaranteed fix.
Connecting a crate is a separate fit check
The manufacturer says the pen can connect to a wire crate. Confirm the exact crate, connections and door clearance, and check for gaps and sharp contact points. Do not assume any crate connection is automatically secure.
Petmate's separate 24-inch two-door puppy crate lists $69.99, but the default variant was sold out when checked. It includes a divider and removable pan and serves a different purpose. Its packaged measurements should not be used as usable interior space. Choose by the puppy's fit and needs, not by the cheaper starting price.
A shared puppy-care timeline can help caregivers coordinate breaks and supervision around the pen.
Is the tallest version escape-proof?
No height guarantees containment for a climber or jumper. Observe the individual dog and reassess the environment if it tries to escape.
Does eight panels mean a 192-inch-wide play area?
No. That figure is total panel length. The sample square is approximately 48 inches per side before hardware and clearance.
